Due to flooding and the Foot and Mouth restrictions, the Summer and Autumn months were difficult. Thank you to the Masters for your hard work and efforts in keeping the Field motivated and to all the Landowners and Farmers who extended hospitality and hosted the Saturday pleasure rides.
At the A.G.M., in November, all Members were strongly reminded of their responsibilities whilst out hunting. Everyone needs to remain vigilant and remember, that it is our intention to hunt within the law, in accordance with the Hunting Act 2004. We must not become complacent.
I wish everyone a very Happy New Year

RECENT EVENTS
A heartfelt ‘Thank you’ is due to the Masters: they very worked hard to keep the Field
Both interested and exercised during the FMD restrictions, but there was no doubt that
everyone was relieved when Autumn Hound Exercise resumed on the 18th October
and we were again Meeting regularly. The well-attended Opening Meet was held on the 6th November at Bilborough and the following weekend saw a good turnout at Frickley.
As the Hunt Meets in various parts of the Country, it is becoming obvious how much work
and investment has taken place throughout the Country during the Summer and Autumn.
Several riders have commented on the new and repaired jumps and several have been taken
by surprise – ‘That wasn’t there last time’!! ‘When did that happen?’
Meetings can often be a bore and a chore, but no Hunt can operate without them. The AGM,
held at The Chequers Inn, Ledsham on the 14th November had the usual fair share of ‘boring
stuff’ but, an interesting initiative was raised by Members and will be developed during the next
few months – look for more details about this, later in the ‘Forward’
The main social event during November was the well-attended Masters’ Ball, held for the
first time for many years, at The Old Swan Hotel, Harrogate. Thank you to Jane Burnell,
who arranged the event on behalf of the Mastership.
It’s important to remember that, as a Hunt, we do not operate in isolation we
have good neighbours and friends, throughout the national network of Hunts, and, as with personal
friends, it’s very good to stay in touch. Tuesday 20th November saw a good contingent of B&BMH
Members accept the invitation to take the Badsworth & Bramham Moor Hounds and
ride with the Holderness at Warter. The day was rather misty, but stayed
mostly dry – some would call it atmospheric!
It was good to visit new Country and re-new friendships. Several stoic riders
were seen hacking the long route back to the wagons, in the dusk and rain after
a long day, but they were still smiling!
There was also plenty of smiling at the excellent breakfast held before the
Weeton Meet. The busy morning meant hard work for the ‘chefs’. It is amazing
that such an excellent, full English Breakfast can be catered for in a barn. A
good start to the day, which was enjoyed and much appreciated. Thanks to all
involved, not forgetting Bryn Rushbrooke for his hospitality and the use of his Barn
and Chris Bellerby for access to his land and enabling the Field to jump ‘the hedges’ by providing an alternative route down the headland – see plenty of photos on the Website of the ‘thrills & spills’ showing how the Field made good use of the headland and jumps.
page2
After a difficult period, it was good to see some good news for all hunting people appear in the national press on the 1st December ‘The first foxhunting conviction is quashed’.
The first huntsman to be convicted of breaching the Hunting Act won an appeal. …Judge Graham Cottle said he was satisfied that Mr Wright had believed, perhaps optimistically, that he had put in place safeguards to ensure compliance with the Act . (please see Chairman’s Message)
Looking at the Meet Card, there appears to be plenty Social events and interesting Meets planned to keep us occupied and entertained into the New Year and beyond. It’s hoped you are enjoying the Season.

MODERN HUNTING & COURTESY
Good manners are today, sadly, sometimes considered, to be rather ‘old fashioned’ but the behaviour
and etiquette of the Field / Followers and a consideration for safety are much more than just ‘good
manners’. A code of expected behaviour has gradually evolved over hundreds of years of hunting as a ‘tried and tested’ way to conduct oneself when out hunting. Most of the traditions are very practical and have been accepted in the past, by hunters, to enable everyone to enjoy the day out with Hounds.
During the past few years, the essence of hunting has changed and Hunts must adapt to meet these changes. These days, many people now riding out have not grown up in hunting or farming households and, through no fault of their own, do not really know what is expected of them. This situation is confusing, sometimes dangerous, and creates problems for Newcomers, Visitors and the Field in general. It is for the benefit of all concerned, that the Badsworth & Bramham Moor provides clear information and encouragement, to Newcomers, Visitors and the mounted Field, and ask everyone to consider traditional ‘old fashioned’ good manners, common sense, behaviour and etiquette. It was agreed by the Members at the recent AGM that an updated leaflet to be called -
‘Modern Hunting & Courtesy’ be produced and circulated as a reminder to all, that actually, manners really do matter.
A quick poll at the AGM indicated some of the issues which are causing problems and should be included in the leaflet – The question is asked of everyone ‘Do any of these apply to you?’
Perhaps a little thought could easily improve the situation. Some of the issues mentioned -
• Late arrivals at the Meet
• The blank stare - ignoring / not acknowledging help from Foot Followers, the public or motorists.
• Lack of consideration for other road users - it doesn’t take much to say ‘Thank you’.
• Not forming an orderly queue at jumps. Riders cutting into jumps / not waiting.
• Those who do not know or understand what is going on, but yet do not ask (perhaps they are concerned about appearing foolish?) If in doubt please ask.
• Children / young riders not helping with gates.
• Hair not tied back. Sloppy turnout and dress. The flying tie.
• Inappropriate tack / brightly coloured numnahs
• Disregard for other riders e.g. Riders galloping away from obstacles (gates, steep/narrow places etc) whilst other riders are still negotiating the obstacle.
• Riders who know their horses do not jump reliably, yet still push to the front and then block jumps.
• Not pulling away from jumps after a refusal and going to the back of the queue.
• Hollering – not acceptable nowadays.
• Red / green ribbon horses not staying at the back of the Field.
• Not keeping up with the Field Master.
• Obstructing Whips / Huntsman. Not turning horses to face hounds.
page 5
There is no intention to cause offence to anyone, or create any bad feeling by mentioning this subject. Some, who have been hunting all their lives, may feel that such information is unnecessary and, indeed, unwelcome, but experienced Hunters are asked to be generous and share their expertise by talking with Newcomers and Visitors to help them understand what is going on. The Newcomers and Visitors are the Hunters of the future – or they will be, if they understand what hunting is really all about.
As previously mentioned, this initiative was proposed, and agreed, by the Members during ‘question time’ at the AGM. The intention is to circulate a booklet giving easy to read, useful information intended to help Newcomers and Visitors but also to remind existing Members and Followers about the traditional ways and so make hunting safer, and more enjoyable, for everyone.
As part of this ongoing initiative, it is planned to hold a Newcomers’ Day on 2nd February 2008 at Frickley and an entertaining evening for everyone, next Autumn, when ‘Modern Hunting & Courtesy’ will be discussed, along with safety, dress, history, supper and a quiz .The emphasis will be on entertaining / enjoyable – more details about this nearer the time.
