CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

I trust you are all Summering well

May I thank, most sincerely, all those who have given their time and services free of charge ‘Thank You’.

On your behalf, I would also publicly like to recognise, and thank, your Committee and the Mastership. The work they put into your sport is considerable. I can assure you that they all have a total commitment to the Hunt and continue to work towards improving our Country and our Sport. During the coming Season, we must all play our part by supporting them, and also each other.

Finally, the news that David Carr has stepped down from the Mastership: but be assured, we have not seen or heard the last of him! He remains on the Committee and is a valued Member of the Hunt, and will remain so.

David, for the time you gave us as a Master and for your services to the Hunt, may we say ‘Thank you’.

Charlie Warde-Aldam (Chairman Badsworth & Bramham Moor)

RECENT EVENTS

January 2008 started in fine style, with thanks going to Nikki Bailey for the arrangements.

The New Year Party at The Rogerthorpe Manor went with the usual ‘swing’ we wined, dined and danced the evening away! A few days later, some of the hardier Members went out to the first Joint Meet with the York & Ainsty North which was held at Birstwith Hall. Due to the wet weather, the going was heavy, but, thanks to the efforts of the Masters and the Countryman, there was plenty to keep the Field occupied with new jumps and newly opened Country – an exciting day was reported.

The morning of the Newcomers’ Day at Frickley did not begin well – overnight snow had covered most of the U.K – BUT the good news was that it had somehow missed Frickley!!

Thanks go to Charlie Warde-Aldam who gave a good day around the estate and somehow still managed to bring home approximately the same number of riders he set off with (at least we think he did!) There have been strange noises heard in the woodland!

It was a joy to go to the Cherry Tree and have an excellent breakfast before hunting the beautiful Country around High Hoyland. Thanks to the Cherry Tree for feeding us so well and to Archie and Linda for the organisation.

Sadly, having lost a day at Walton to frost in December, we lost another day to the weather at Carlton Towers, but the going had improved to enable a good Field to attend a new venue - the first Meet to be held at Cowthorpe.

On Sunday 24th February, at the Lunch at Rudding Park, following an excellent lunch, we were introduced to the Speaker - a lady who appeared to be more than capable of living up to her 11 Christian names! Clarissa Theresa Philomena Aileen Mary Josephine Agnes Elsie Trilby Louise Esmerelda Dickson Wright. Her C.V. and books certainly make interesting reading – she’s living a full and varied life, including being the youngest woman to be called to the Bar, actively campaigning on behalf of the Countryside Alliance, T.V. Cook, author and along with many more experiences, she even found time to play the part of the Gamekeeper in the Sitcom ‘Absolutely Fabulous’. Listening to her reminiscences after lunch I felt that I was glad she was on ‘our team’ and campaigning for the Country way of life – and not on the other side!! Certainly a lady to be reckoned with!! Whilst we remember the Lunch, we should also remember the hard work that went into the organisation and thank Simon Mackaness for his hospitality, Jennifer Robson and Marjorie Periam for the organisation of a ‘sell out’ lunch and, of course, Clarissa Dickson Wright for making time to be an interesting and entertaining main speaker.

They say that a week is a long time in politics – but a week in the life of the Badsworth & Bramham Moor sometimes has to be lived to be believed!! The Sunday following the Lunch at Rudding was spent at the Team Chase at Frickley – therein lies a tale!

The Team Chase Committee spent Saturday 1ST March preparing for the event – everything was ready and laid out in preparation before they eventually went home. However, in Diana Nicholson’s words –‘ Sunday 2nd March did not start auspiciously! We left a large marquee set up on Saturday evening containing all the tables, chairs, glasses, number bibs, programmes, paperwork etc.

The view from Charlie’s, Justina’s and Deanna’s windows at 6.30am the following morning showed a pile of canvas in the wrong field. With lots of help from everyone collecting from all over the field, borrowing lorries and sponsors relocated to a garage, we actually managed to start only ten minutes late!’

To Charlie Warde-Aldam, ‘Thank you for Frickley’ and to Di Nicholson, Justina Burkinshaw and Annette Tasker and everyone who helped ‘An amazing job and on behalf of the Hunt – well done!’

The Team Chase event has made the Horse & Hound for the past three years! Voted by the riders as having the best Course in the Country and for coping well in adversity – one year frozen ground – most other events cancelled: last year deluged with rain many events cancelled: this year storm & tempest!!! If you didn’t go to the Team Chase, you missed a treat, after the storm, the course ran very well and received lots of praise. Teams travelled from Suffolk, Wales and Shropshire.

If you feel you have time to join an intrepid team and can cope with whatever nature can throw at you and still organise an award winning national event – the Team Chase Committee is waiting to hear from you!! You don’t have to be Superman or Wonder Woman; or even own a cloak and sequinned tights - you just need to be willing to help! Call Di Nicholson 01423 339902

Suddenly, it was the end of the Season. The day at The Stables, Hutton Wandesley Hall, started with an excellent breakfast courtesy of the Hunt Ladies. Several Visitors were welcomed and joined us for the day. The day ended perfectly - we got back to The Stables for tea, just before the heavens opened! – Excellent timing from the Field Master, Wayne Burnell.

It’s always a rather sad time – the end of the Season. Thank you to Mrs Sarah York for her hospitality and to the Hunt Ladies Jane Burnell, Jackie Buckley, Pat Hoyland and everyone who helped with the catering – especially the coffee machine – a coffee pot so big it needed wheels!

Not much time to mope! The end of March found many Members at the 2008 Badsworth & Bramham Moor Point-to-Point. The Point-to-Point Committee were delighted that again, the entries were excellent and the Meeting had the highest number of entries recorded at a Yorkshire Meeting! A successful day at the races – thanks are due to the P-t-P Committee.

Just because the Season ends does not mean that everything stops – the Supporters’ Committee continue to arrange Social events throughout the Spring and Summer.

The start of April brings the Grand National to Aintree and the Grand National Draw to the Badsworth & Bramham Moor. This year the Grand National evening was again held at the Wetherby Rugby Club and the winners were Kathy Hughes, Liz Barnes, Jackie Buckley and Pat Hoyland – well done! The quiz had several worthy teams – even though cheating was banned this year for some reason! Thanks to Jane & Wayne Burnell and Helen Greenwood for the arrangements: pie n’ peas – thanks to Jackie Buckley and Pat Hoyland. No time to rest – we were straight into the Hunter Trial at Campsmount on Sunday 6th April, held by the kind permission of Mr and Mrs Carr. Thank you. The course ran very well and the weather was good. The teamwork of Peter Turland, Judy Martin, Annette and Andrew Tasker, Justina Burkinshaw and all the other helpers resulted in an excellent day. (By the way, you are welcome to join ‘The Team’ if you wish to join in, have fun and help!)

The entry levels were good and the riding of a good standard, but the highlight of the day had to be Sophie Platt and Katie Wright riding the pairs competition, side saddle in full habit – I’ve never seen a spontaneous round of applause at a Hunter Trial before – but Sophie and Katie had a standing ovation all the way round – well done ladies! Good to see traditions being continued – see a print from the archives showing the Misses Leatham who rode out with the Badsworth in 1911.If anyone has a photograph of Sophie and Katie taken at the Hunter Trial,The archives would welcome a copy!

Now, Spring is here, Summer is around the corner and there are plenty of shows, events and Summer Balls to attend. See all the forthcoming events and contact details listed. Please, join in and lend a hand.

The Country will continue to be opened, and improved, for the benefit of Members and Visitors. Most Followers and riders last Season will have noticed many of the new jumps and repaired fences – see the photographs on the website www.badsworthandbramhammoor.com which show new challenges met, and answered, by the Field – some more successfully than others!

The past few years, especially 2007 / 2008 have obviously, been difficult: however, the Badsworth & Bramham Moor has recognised the need to change and has faced up to the requirement to adapt to hunting in the 21st century. As illustrated by the above Hounds, the Hunt is looking to Season 2008 / 2009 and the future – it is hoped that the Members, Subscribers and Followers will continue to support and ‘run’ with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor. We are one of the oldest Hunts and we are, certainly, one of the best.

……………………………………………………..

MEMBERS’ NEWS Change in Mastership The Badsworth & Bramham Moor Committee were saddened to receive a resignation from the Joint Mastership. Mr C.D. Carr feels that, after serving the Hunt as a MFH for many years, the time is now right for him to stand down. The Mastership will continue with 6 Joint Masters. You will be pleased to hear that Mr Carr will continue to be involved with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor as a Committee Member. As a tribute, and to thank Mr Carr for his years of service to the Hunt, a presentation is planned to take place at the Puppy Show. Anyone wishing to show appreciation for Mr Carr’s work and contribution to the Hunt, over the years, is asked to contact Mr Peter Turland MFH (01302 702028). On behalf of the Members, the Committee thanks Mr Carr for his generous, long-term support and contribution to the Badsworth & Bramham Moor, as a Master

Change in Committee Dr Jennifer Robson has sadly, decided to step down from the Committee: there is, therefore, now a vacancy. If you are interested, and feel able to serve on the Committee, you are requested to forward your name to the Secretary over the course of the Summer, for consideration at the AGM, in November. All candidates must be Registered Members of B&BMH Ltd and applications must be supported by the names of a proposer and a seconder, both of whom are also Registered Members of B&BMH Ltd. If you require any further information, please contact Jenny T.W. to discuss. On behalf of the Hunt, the Committee thanks Jennifer Robson for all her hard work and effort both at Committee Meetings and organising fund raising events. It is hoped that Jennifer will continue to be connected to the Hunt, albeit in a social capacity. Subscriptions The Committee has managed to hold Subscriptions at the same level for the past three years. Sadly, it is now impossible to continue at the same level of Subscriptions for Season 2008 / 2009. All details are listed in the Subscription Card. It is very important to note that whilst there has had to be an increase, the Committee have also taken all possible steps to lessen the impact on Members, by introducing various payment options and expanding the type of Subscriptions available. If any Member wishes to discuss financial arrangements, in confidence, please contact the Secretary.

Dates for your Diary –

MEMBER’S COMMENT CORNER

Dear Hunter Trial Jump Judges Could I please say a very BIG ‘Thank you’ to all the wonderful people who helped at the Hunter Trial on Sunday 6th April at Campsall. It isn’t until you take on a job like this that you realise just what goes into organising these events. I only sorted out Jump Judges etc., but there is an awful lot that goes on behind the scenes that never gets mentioned. My Judges were brilliant, some had to help out for longer than they should have, but they got on with it. I don’t want to mention everyone individually (as there were quite a few), and I wasn’t able to write ‘Thank You’ letters to everyone, as I only had names and phone numbers for some people. At least this way, hopefully, the majority of Judges will know how very much you were appreciated.

It wasn’t just the Jump Judges, but there was the ‘food lady’, who turned up just as the event started, and set about making sandwiches, flasks etc., to make sure that everyone helping was fed and looked after. There was also the food ‘Distribution Team’ who spent all day travelling around all the Jump Judges making sure that the food and drink reached all quarters. It was thanks to you all that my day was comparatively easy. We started off having a lovely day, the weather lasted until the Intermediate Class was about to start, the sky turned black and the snow / sleet came down – not what we wanted at all! Did I hear any complaints from my Judges – not at all! A lot of the feedback was very positive, so, hopefully, come September, you will be more than happy to volunteer your services again. Hopefully, we may be able to recruit some new helpers as well, as these events can only run with people coming forward to offer their help. So come on all you Members of B&BM, put your name forward for next time, we can always use the help. Put something back into your hobby.

Thank you again, everyone – you all know who you are and to the Team Chase Judges a second dose of ‘Thank you’

p.s. What happened after the horse went swimming in The lake? I’ve not seen anything as funny for ages!!

They retired – very wet, but smiling saying they’d had a great day!

Advice to Hunt Members on how to recognise the Secretary (for ease of paying Field Money)

The Secretary: This hard working, down trodden, timid and unfortunate individual is easily recognisable by the permanent worried expression, looks older than they should and is generally abused by both Masters and Members

Courtesy of A.N. Other Hunt

Oh Dear!!!! Must do something about my image!! I’d hate to Jenny Stocker be thought of as timid!

Thank You

Many thanks for my hunting with you in Yorkshire; I had a brilliant 3 days! Everyone was very welcoming so a big ‘Thank you’ from me, and my horse Oliver, who so enjoyed getting out with you all. Hope to come up again in 2008.

Happy Hunting in 2008

Kind Regards

BRAMHAM MOOR PONY CLUB

For Bramham Moor Pony Club, 2008 has started where 2007 left off – a further increase in membership and excellent attendances at all rallies, from the day rallies at Christmas / New Year, right through to our new evening rallies scheduled to run throughout the year. Most popular, so far, have been the Easter Egg Rally (as usual) and the Cross Country Ride at Howden.

In terms of the various disciplines, we are continuing with our regular training sessions. For the first time for some years we entered 2 teams in the Area Quiz. Although neither qualified for the National Quiz, both teams performed very creditably.

Mounted Games is one of the most active disciplines this early in the year and our Teams have already competed in a number of ‘friendlies’, including our own at Wetherby Racecourse on the 19th April 2008. One of the Senior A Team members, Fran Reeve, has been selected to be on the England Mounted Games Team at Royal Windsor in May on her pony ‘Socks’. We wish Fran, and the rest of the team, ‘Good Luck’. We have already competed in the Area Games this year, as the date was earlier than usual. Our Senior A Team finished a creditable 3rd behind the Rockwood and the Badsworth. This is an excellent result since we lost 4 of our 5 A Team members at the end of last Season and one of the riders has only just moved up from Juniors.

Looking forward to the Summer: the Bramham Moor is again booked in to provide gallopers at Bramham Horse Trials in June and both Senior and Junior camps are arranged for August. As usual, these will be complemented by a series of rallies. This year we are also running the Pony Club Area Dressage on the 24th July, also at Bramham Park. The planning for this is already well under way.

If you are not a member of the Bramham Moor Hunt Pony Club and are interested in joining, please contact Elizabeth Hughes ion 0113 282 0478.
