CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

Dear Members,

Here we are about to start another hunting Season.

Since this time last year, there have been several issues to cause us concern and, as you are all aware, the cliché ‘Credit Crunch’ has been wildly bandied around. The reality of the ‘Credit Crunch’ for us is that this year, for the first time since the amalgamation, we have had to safeguard the Hunt by arranging an overdraft facility.

This has been due to the fact that the Hunt has received less income from all areas: FMD reduced our Field Money and Caps at the start of last Season: fundraising events organised by the Supporters’ Committee did not receive the full support they deserved. The weather, sadly, also had a part to play and resulted in the abandonment of the Beckwithshaw Horse Trials and the Autumn Hunter Trial. These two events alone could have averted the need to arrange an overdraft facility.

I must say at this stage how grateful we are to the major sponsors of the Horse Trials for continuing to support the event: without them, we would be in a serious position.

We are all very aware that Subscriptions have gone up. This, I’m afraid, had to happen and the timing of the increases could not have happened at a worse time for some. I remind you, however, that this is the first increase in three years, so divide the increase by three and you’ll find that the Subs. have not gone up by more than the annual inflation rate. This outlook, perhaps, softens the blow of the increased amount we have just paid.

When one has to pay more for anything, one quite naturally asks the question ‘What am I getting for my money?’ ‘ Can I get better value anywhere else?’ Our increases have not exceeded the similar Subs. of any of our adjacent Hunts – and they too are having the same financial pressures.

All Subscribers must have thought about the situation carefully and I am delighted to see that our Subscribers have risen to the challenge of these difficult times and are back in force and ready for the Season.

The Mastership is fully aware of the situation. I give you my assurance that they have been, and will continue to be urged to make use of all that is available, to provide you with the best sport and entertainment possible.

Please stay supportive of the Hunt and all the hard work that is being done by our Secretary, Masters and Supporters’

Charlie Warde-Aldam

(Chairman Badsworth & Bramham Moor)

RECENT EVENTS

The wet Summer came and went! There were, however, one or two bright spots to distract us –

Thank you to the Mastership for a very enjoyable Puppy Show held at Kennels in June, a very pleasant, sunny, well-attended afternoon. After lunch, a presentation was made to Mr David Carr to mark his retirement from the Mastership. During the speeches, Mr Carr was thanked for all his help and generous support given to the Badsworth & Bramham Moor over the years. The afternoon was not without humour – ‘Hounds Dancing’ in the Couples Class was ‘poetry in motion’ – as well as very funny to watch –unless you were a Puppy Walker at the other end of the leash! (you really had to be there to understand this reference!) One incident was, however, caught on camera ‘Hound checks marks on scorecard behind Judge’s back’ – they learn very young at Kennels!

Thank you to the Judges:- Mr A Waugh M.F.H. S & W Wilts David Elliott.

Huntsman - Holderness

There was a marked change in the weather for the Terrier Show in July – it rained before the event, it rained during the event and it rained after the event – but, in true Yorkshire fashion, we carried on regardless! Thanks go to Mr Carr for his permission to hold the event at Stapleton Park.

Page 2
A few days later saw the Badsworth & Bramham Hunt Relay Team take up the challenge in the Inter Hunt Relay at the Great Yorkshire Show. We all saw on television, the sea of mud that was the Yorkshire Show Ground, but, the Badsworth & Bramham Moor Relay Team showed what they were made of and came away with a good share of the prize money and with the Hunt honour still intact. Well done to all who took part!

The third week of July sadly saw the Beckwithshaw Horse Trials affected by the wet weather – as were many other national events. Months of hard work and preparation came to nought with the ruling, by British Eventing, ‘not to run’ – a truly devastating decision for the BHT Committee Members.

An evening barbecue, in late July, at the Estate House, Frickley, with singing, food and music. It was a sad goodbye to Deanna & Peter Cook who have now left to take up new responsibilities in Devon. We wish them well for the future.

Any singers or musicians out there?

Now that Deanna’s left for pastures new, perhaps we should hold an X Factor evening to find someone to lead the community singing when we need to keep our spirits up! Deanna will be a hard act to follow!

In direct contrast to the pattern of 2008 Summer weather – Sunday 27th July, the day of the Escrick Fun Ride – the high temperature forced the organisers to retreat into the shade under a tree – where they were forced to relax and take regular chilled drinks! A fun day – we only lost one Team this year and even they were found eventually!

NEW MEMBER OF STAFF In August Christine Wilkinson joined the Staff at Kennels as Groom for the Season 2008 / 2009. Welcome to the Badsworth & Bramham Moor.

A ‘Let’s Talk Hunting’ evening was held at The Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel in mid September. Please see the full report later in the newsletter for all the details. The Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel is still recovering!!!

The ‘Let’s Talk Hunting’ evening was a good lead into the start of Autumn Hunting, which, co-incidentally began a few days later, at Stapleton on 20th September with a beautiful morning and an excellent turnout for the first day.

MEMBERS’ NEWS

Changes in Committee?

If you are interested, and feel able to help and give a little time to the Hunt by serving on the Committee, you are requested to forward your name to the Secretary ASAP, for consideration at the AGM, which will be held at 8.00pm, on Wednesday 12th November at The Chequers Inn, Ledsham

All candidates must be Registered Members of B&BMH Ltd and applications must be supported by the names of a proposer and a seconder, both of who are also Registered Members of B&BMH Ltd.

Modern Hunting & Courtesy

‘Modern Hunting & Courtesy’ This initiative was agreed by the Committee at the Spring Committee Meeting. The intention being to help Members Visitors and Newcomers understand more about hunting, the importance of Field manners and the need for correct turnout when hunting with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor.

Page 3
Hunting obviously, occupies one of the more challenging, adventurous areas of equestrian activities and we are delighted that ever year, riders choose to join us for the Season, for the Newcomers’ Days or just for a day or two during the Season.

As a Hunt we have existed for almost 300 years and over this period of time certain expected patterns of behaviour and traditions have evolved as a result of ‘trial and error’ – the historical equivalent of today’s ‘elf & safety’.

Over recent years the Members of the Badsworth & Bramham Moor have grown increasingly concerned that the traditions, dress and basic good manners are being eroded: as well as being a source of irritation, this has the more serious potential to cause accidents.

It is understood that this fairly recent change in behaviour, is not at all intentional: new Members and Newcomers desperately want to ‘do the right thing’ in fact, ‘doing the right thing’ is one of the major causes of concern and nerves for first timers!

We believe the reason is, that these days, many riders do not come from families where horses, hunting or indeed farming is a way of life. In the past, hunting and farming etiquette was absorbed from a very early age. Modern life has changed this connection and nowadays, many riders do not automatically know what is expected of them when they go hunting. In fact, at first, to many Newcomers, hunting can appear to be a mystery and all rather confusing; indeed, the quiet periods can be a surprise to riders when they expected to be galloping and jumping hedges all the time.

It is essential that today’s riders understand the reasons behind the expectations of good manners, types of dress and using the correct kit – it’s not just ‘old fashioned’ pretension – it’s actually ‘elf & safety in action!

The development phase of the Modern Hunting & Courtesy project has been ongoing during the Summer and progress so far –

i) Links have been strengthened with the Yorkshire Post, with two very positive articles published on the 6th September & 25th October

ii) An easy read information card has been produced and is intended for circulation at Agricultural Shows and to be handed out at Meets

iii) A booklet has been completed giving full explanations as to what to expect when out hunting.

(This updated leaflet is now available FOC for everyone, especially Newcomers. For copies, please contact the Secretary).

Thanks to everyone who contributed, commented & offered constructive criticism

iv) A well-attended ‘Let’s Talk Hunting’ evening at the Rogerthorpe Manor, in mid September, preceded the start of Autumn Hunting.

Let’s Talk Hunting’ evening @ The Rogerthorpe Manor

The Committee’s ‘Modern Hunting & Courtesy’ initiative was launched at The Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel on Wednesday 17th September – an evening advertised as ‘different’. It did prove to be a lively evening, with approx 260 attending to hear the speakers and view the Trade Fair. Judith Skilbeck (ex Master Bilsdale and recent Regional Director of the Countryside Alliance) was the main speaker and spoke on Hunting in the North – remembering the joys, the perils, and happy times.

The West Yorkshire Police gave a ‘whizzy’ power point presentation about security aimed especially at horse owners and farmers.

Mr Charlie Warde- Aldam ’launched’ the Modern Hunting & Courtesy initiative, and drew particular attention to several points –

i) When the Field is asked to be in single file around a headland to protect crops – this means you should be as close to the hedge as physically possible – not just ‘near enough’. Unnecessary, expensive damage to crops means we may not be invited back by the farmer.

ii) Please keep up with the Field Master – if you lose touch, please catch up on roads and tracks not across country.

iii) Please obey the Highway Code – we have no special exemption to block roads and delay drivers. Park sensibly – not in gates or adjacent to jumps or gaps. If you are a car follower – please switch off your engine if you are stationary or Hounds are passing – will A) save you money in these difficult times B) exhaust fumes ruin Hounds ‘noses’ which affects scenting and running so spoiling the day for everyone.

iv) When going across country – if your horse isn’t likely to take a jump after trying – please use the gate to prevent damage to the land. To quote Charlie Warde-Aldam ‘Every field has a gate’. If your horse does refuse, please don’t block the jump – pull away immediately – but be aware of, and pay close attention to, riders coming to the jump behind you. If you do cause damage please report this to a Master, or the Secretary, so that repairs can be arranged

Page 4
v) When hacking to Meets, it may spoil the scent if you go across the Country – please travel by roads and tracks to prevent spoiling the day.

vi) The dress code can appear complicated, but was briefly explained so that Newcomers will be able to recognise who is who -

Every Hunt has differently designed Hunt Buttons. On Hunt coats buttons indicate ‘position and responsibility’

3 buttons = A Member who has been invited to wear Hunt Buttons for services to the Hunt.

4 buttons = A Master

5 buttons = The highest award, very rarely offered.

Gentlemen who have been invited to wear the ‘red coat’ should team this with white breeches and mahogany ‘top’ boots. All other gentlemen should wear plain black hunt coat, beige breeches and plain black boots.

vii) Ladies – Hair - please use a net if your hair is long. Jewellery - Stock pins should be plain and earrings avoided to prevent catching them in woodland (to quote Charlie – it will solve the question of jewellery - you’ll not need earrings again if that happens!) Ouch!!

viii) Spurs – to be effective, spurs should be worn straight – not low down on the heel.

A lot to remember – but Newcomers - it soon becomes second nature.

‘Dastardly Dick’ Nicholson gave clear and concise insight into the Health & Safety reasoning behind the need for common sense and good manners when hunting – concern did grow in some quarters as shoes were removed!! But all was well, he stopped at footwear!

Dolores Craven arranged a display of historical hunting dress for the pageant that showed the development of hunting dress through the ages up to the present day. It was good to see so many Members throw caution to the wind and take part – dressed and ready for hunting today or yesteryear.

Wayne Burnell found his metier as the children’s Pied Piper Nigel Dickson blew until his head must have hurt!

There was a 2nd Time Around Hunting Clothes stall – arranged by Jane Burnell.

Jane Gill, Mark Melladay, Andrew Tasker, Ian Westwood, Leasha Short and Christine Wilkinson all ‘pitched in’ behind the scenes - organising Hounds, Terriers, Lurchers, Members for the pageant plus several excited children – definitely a good example of multi tasking!! We had raffles, competitions, supper, Hounds in the Grounds, drink was taken (allegedly) and many old friends were remembered and re-united and several Newcomers began to discover what hunting is all about!

Nikki Bailey co-ordinated an excellent Trade Fair where 23 businesses / organisations were represented -

Countryside Alliance

A recent change - The new Regional Director of the Countryside Alliance for the North, including the Yorkshire Region, is Richard Dodd. Richard can be contacted on Richard-dodd@countryside-alliance.org

There is an important message from the Countryside Alliance for all Hunt Supporters -

‘After much lobbying from the Countryside Alliance the Conservative Party has agreed to a free vote in Government time, in their first Parliament, to repeal the Hunting Act. It is imperative that we keep our side of the bargain and unite as a community to support this repeal movement. To safeguard the future of hunting, support through membership of the Countryside Alliance is vital. ’Size matters’ and through growing in size and through continued lobbying, manifestos will continue to be influenced.’

Every Hunt Supporter should be a Member of the Countryside Alliance – please see the ‘Repeal Deal’ leaflet enclosed with this mailing. If you hunt and you are not a Member of the Countryside Alliance, now is the time for you to act and join – the benefits for the Countryside Alliance will be increased numbers and strength. The benefits for you will be one of the best, if not the best, insurance package available at the best price, for riders who hunt, plus other benefits. It is a long standing requirement that to ride with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor all riders must have adequate personal and third Party insurance – the Countryside Alliance package provides the perfect insurance solution to enable you to fulfil this requirement.

To quote the Chairman on this subject-

‘IF YOU ENJOY YOUR HUNTING - STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.’

Cover Picture of the Forward May Edition

The last photograph from the archives for the time being. Courtesy of Major W. Warde-Aldam and Mr Partridge. You had a clue -The Motor Cycle magazine – March 1958.The response was amazing! There were are, obviously, many ‘biker boys’ out there!

Well done to Adrian Chew and Richard Nicholson – worthy winners – they knew it all!! Adrian I’ll leave a prize at Kennels for you – Richard

I’ll keep yours in the car until I see you out Hunting.

I’m reliably informed that the motorcycle is a British 2 stroke 200 c.c.

Velocette L.E., which started production in 1949. It was the only motorcycle made with mudguards and it was shaft driven, not chain driven – which would explain perhaps why the gears were difficult to manage. The two Terrier Men have also been identified and one of the gentlemen is still very ‘hale and hearty’. There was speculation as to the conversation – it may have been about pretty girls, as indicated on the magazine page, but the likely hood is that they were discussing the issue of the day for Terrier Men, which was the 1958 Scott Henderson Report into the control of foxes. It’s ironic, that in the Scott Henderson Report, the RSPCA stated categorically that foxes should be controlled and the hunting of foxes was the preferred, most humane method.

(No comment is made – just quoting from the Report) Thanks to Major Warde-Aldam& Mr Partridge for setting such an interesting challenge and to Adrian Chew and Richard Nicholson especially, for responding so well.
