Wentbridge - Boxing Day 2008Wentbridge - Boxing Day 2008
CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

To all Masters, Subscribers, Supporters and Staff.

A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR

Charlie Warde-Aldam

(Chairman Badsworth & Bramham Moor)

…………………………………………………………………………………….

RECENT EVENTS

A busy few weeks –

Newcomers’ Day at Frickley - 122 riders joined the Field for the Newcomers’ Day at Frickley. Thanks go the Field Master for the day - Charlie Warde-Aldam who led the large Field with many very excited Newcomers around Frickley – not a job for the feint hearted! The good news is that we now new Members and regular Visitors as a direct result of the 2008 ‘Modern Hunting & Courtesy’ initiative culminating in the Newcomers’ Day. The Badsworth & Bramham Moor intends to continue to encourage (and expect) good Field manners and that hunting traditions will be respected.

Autumn Hunting – It’s important to remember that all is not ‘gloom and doom’. There is the occasional good news such as the start of Autumn Hunting! There were good Field numbers, new Members and Visitors learning about what is involved when ‘going hunting’ and some excellent days. Thank you to all who hosted Meets and to the Masters for the early mornings. One particular morning at Paradise was beautiful – mist at sunrise – a perfect Autumn morning of ‘mist and mellow fruitfulness’.

Opening Meet – A good turnout to start the Season, at Bilborough.

Hunt Breakfast – A ‘Full Monty’ sit down Breakfast (including whisky porridge) in Bryn’s barn to be followed by a day around Weeton – the sun even shone! The prospect of breakfast and ‘the hedges’ brought together a good Field including several Visitors (which include the ‘Pendle Gang’ and visitors from the Middleton). Liz is still saying – ‘Wow! I did it! Thanks to Bryn for the barn, the Hunt Ladies and Gentlemen for the breakfast and Chris Bellerby.

The Masters’ Ball – The 2008 Masters’ Ball was held at the Bramham Suite at Wetherby Race Course. This was the first time at this new venue and, thanks to Jane Burnell, following the meal we danced the night away to the live band and disco.

Cocktail Party – Thank you to Mr & Mrs Caddick for opening their home to host the Cocktail Party. A busy, well-attended, enjoyable afternoon. As well as the opportunity to meet friends and relax, there was also the possibility for guests to do their Christmas shopping early looking for unusual gifts and clothing in the ‘Bazaar’. Thanks go to Mrs Ann Lodge, Nikki Bailey, Liz Barnes, Scribble House, Regent & Orient, Good Going, The Royal Hotel, Iron Horse, The Rogerthorpe Manor Hotel, The Wentbridge Hotel, Oophs –a –Daisy, and everyone involved for your support (the canapés and raspberry vodka deserve a special mention – you all know who you are!!)

Following a very wet, but very enjoyable day hunting at Frickley it was time to party - The Christmas Party at Wink Lodge – The Rumpus Room was full and friendly – a lovely, traditional start to Christmas – with all the trimmings. We sang carols and karaoke, played games and had an excellent supper – then we were ready for Christmas!

Thanks go to Alan Evans, Jenny Bennett, Annie Westwood, Wendy, Jackie Buckley and Rosemary Carter for their time, energy and generosity.

MEMBERS’ NEWS

Open Letter to The Master, All Hunt Staff & Jenny T.W. I have sent a cheque to Jenny T.W. in memory of my late Father, Bryan Taylor, who died on the 29th November 2008.Gordon Harding told me you had very kindly held a minute’s silence at the Walton Meet. This was a wonderful send-off. Thank you. Father was 91 and for many years had ridden with BMH together with his mother the late Mrs Buckley-Taylor in the days of George Gulliver, Tom Paisley, Tom Cody et al. In recent times and before failing health, Father followed on foot and I drove him when the Meet was nearby at Weeton, Stockeld Park etc. We did not get to the Badsworth Country, as I am not familiar with the roads. I Thank you all for some wonderful memories Pat Perry (Daughter to Byran Taylor)

Hunt Country

Members and Subscribers will have noticed the excellent work going on throughout the Badsworth & Bramham Moor Country – big log piles and a new stone wall at Stapleton: new fence jumps at Towton which mean that there’s now no need to queue for the hunt gates: 16 new jumps were completed in time for the Christmas Eve Meet at Bramham Park. The improvements have been noticed and are greatly appreciated by Subscribers and Visitors. It is the intention of the Mastership to continue to improve and develop the Hunt Country, wherever possible, to provide the Field with excellent days out. If any Farmers / Landowners can assist and have areas suitable for the installation of hunt jumps please contact the Master with responsibility for your area of Country. Likewise, if Subscribers have suggestions of where a jump would be an advantage to the day’s sport, please mention this to a Master.

Mrs Diana Nicholson
In late November, the sad news of the death of Mrs Diana Nicholson was received with shock by all who knew her. A silence was held at the Meet at Bramham and farewells were said at Whixley Church on the 11th December. A well-loved and popular Member of the Badsworth & Bramham, Di will be sadly missed by all who knew her. One of the messages of sympathy received perfectly expressed how many people will remember Diana – ‘Di was a full and friendly person who was very highly regarded by all who knew her’

……………………………………………………………………………………

Bryan Taylor
Mr Bryan Taylor died on the 29th November and the funeral was held in early December. Bryan Taylor, was for many of his 91 years good friend and Supporter of the Badsworth & Bramham Moor. A silence was held at the Meet at Walton in remembrance. ‘One of life’s gentlemen’

Modern Hunting & Courtesy

The intention on this ongoing initiative is to help Members, Visitors and Newcomers understand more about hunting, the importance of Field manners and the need for correct turnout when hunting with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor. The initiative will continue, with interesting ‘snippets’ in the Forward to ensure traditional behaviour and manners are carried forward into the next generation to follow hounds with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor.

Please be prepared to follow any requests and instructions from the Masters. They are responsible for conducting the day’s activities. When riding to hounds, their authority is absolute and their instructions should be cheerfully obeyed. The reason behind this request is simple. The Masters have spent, in many cases, years, working closely with the farmers and landowners: getting to know where (or not) the Field can have access. They know the details of every part of the Hunt Country. This Knowledge is especially important if a farmer/ landowner has a specific request for the Field not to go on part of his land (crops, young stock, sheep, work in progress etc). If the wishes of the landowner are ignored then future access to areas of the Country may be seriously jeopardised. We should always remember that we hunt by the invitation and permission of the farmer/landowner – this is a privilege not a right and, as we are guests, we should behave as guests. Siegfried Sassoon (the famous First World War poet and author) described the reasons for following instructions in his book ‘Memoirs of a Fox-hunting Man’. During a conversation with a Huntsman: the Huntsman said ‘many letters were complaints from small farmers whose seed or sown ground had been ridden over when the land was wet. I asked what he did with these, and he replied that he ‘sent them to the Hunt Secretary and then goes over to talk to them’. Sassoon continued - ‘Watching him open those letters was an important step in my sporting education. Until then I had not begun to realise how much there was to be done apart from the days hunting. Thenceforward I became increasingly aware that a successful day’s hunting was the result of elaborate and tactful preparations.’ There is, however, the occasional amusing result in following instructions - An incident some years ago illustrates how the Masters requests and instructions should be carried out – 2 hunt ladies were asked to go on point on the far side of woodland – they did this happily, quite pleased to have been asked to help. However, two hours later they were having a conversation which went ‘I’m sure he’s forgotten about us’. He had!! They only realised this when one of them was brave enough to leave point and peep around the corner to see an empty field with not a rider in sight. Were the ladies resentful – not at all!!!!!! (well, really not too much – remember the request ‘cheerfully obeyed’) So, members of the Field, please be prepared to help the Masters by following instructions and requests: they are working hard to give you the best of days and you won’t often be left at the far side of the wood!! Members please help the Masters and play your part by talking to new Subscribers and visitors: explaining what is going on and why. The Huntsman and Whipper-ins are also working hard to give you the best possible day – please do not obstruct them in their duties, move aside quickly to let them pass with your horse facing towards Hounds – to prevent Hounds being injured by a horse kicking. If asked to help e.g. by holding a horse if the Huntsman needs to go to hounds on foot, please do so – it’s all part of hunting!

Countryside Alliance

Following the Committee Election the Badsworth & Bramham Moor has a new Countryside Alliance Liaison Representative. If anyone needs any information about the C.A., or wishes to become a Member, please contact Nicky Myers 0113 2716378

The recent message from the Countryside Alliance to all hunt supporters will bear repeating - There is an important message from the Countryside Alliance for all Hunt Supporters -

‘After much lobbying from the Countryside Alliance the Conservative Party has agreed to a free vote in Government time, in their first Parliament, to repeal the Hunting Act. It is imperative that we keep our side of the bargain and unite as a community to support this repeal movement. To safeguard the future of hunting, support through membership of the Countryside Alliance is vital. ’Size matters’ and through growing in size and through continued lobbying, manifestos will continue to be influenced.’

Every Hunt Supporter should be a Member of the Countryside Alliance. If you hunt and you are not a Member of the Countryside Alliance, now is the time for you to act and join – the benefits for the Countryside Alliance will be increased numbers and strength. The benefits for you will be one of the best, if not the best, insurance package available at the best price, for riders who hunt, plus other benefits. It is a long standing requirement that to ride with the Badsworth & Bramham Moor all riders must have adequate personal and third Party insurance – the Countryside Alliance package provides the perfect insurance solution to enable you to fulfil this requirement.

To quote the Chairman on this subject-

‘IF YOU ENJOY YOUR HUNTING - STAND UP AND BE COUNTED.’

Agreement with Chairman’s Message

I don’t often feel the need to make comment in public – but Mr Warde-Aldam’s comments in the last newsletter have made me think. Mr Warde-Aldam spoke about increased costs and expected people to ask themselves the question ‘What am I getting for my money?’ Speaking personally, for my money I’ve had a lifetime’s enjoyment going hunting. I think that If everyone who enjoys their hunting, like I do, showed their support by sending a fiver this Christmas, that would be a real show of support, not just words – mine’s on it’s way, by way of a ‘Thank you’ for a lifetime of happy memories. Name supplied Received and very much appreciated Thank you!
